I remember when Dr. Kalla first started working at Siskin. He was always very reliable each time I needed to talk to him about a patient or page him when he was on call, he always called back promptly, knew his profession very well. He was just starting to greet me by calling me John when I had to leave Siskin. He took excellent care of a lot of people through the years and leaves a huge void to be filled, but I think Dr. Kalla's big smile and laugh will resonate through out the halls of Siskin for many years to come.

I have known Dr Kalla both times he has worked st Siskin Hospital. He is a great Rehab doctor. I will miss him terribly at work. His medical knowledge, his hearty laugh, & those brightly colored shirts is a large part of who he was. My sympathy & condolences to the family who knew him so much more. May God watch over you & give you comfort in the days, months, & years to come.

I want to extend my condolences to Dr. Kalla's family, staff, and friends. He was my doctor for many years. I will remember him as a compassionate, caring, and wise physician. Because our doctor/patient relationship spanned many years, I was aware of the pride and love he felt for his wife, sons, daughter, and extended family. I feel blessed to have known him.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Kalla's passing. I had a post surgery wound that wound not heal for 11 months when I was referred to Memorial's wound center. He took care of me. He was very caring, and after very few visits injected my wound with medication which healed me in very short order. He was fun to be around and I looked forward to each visit. May he rest in peace. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all during this very difficult time. Eileen Marchese, Ooltewah, TN.

I am so deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Kalla's death. I still don't feel like it's real. He has treated the ulcers on my legs from my rare skin disease, NLD, as well as maintained many of my medications. I'm half Pittsburgh myself and we often talked about the Penguins more timcan the Pirates or the Steelers. I feel like I've lost a family member. I have seen him more in the last fifteen years than my actual family. I truly loved him.

Brian was one of my favorite friends growing up in Pittsburgh. I knew his brothers and his parents. We skied together and we listened to Jimi Hendrix. We traveled to Toronto and Washington, DC with school classes. In 1980 we both graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School. That summer, prior to heading off to college at the University of Michigan, we both attended an orientation session in Ann Arbor with a small group of friends. I also saw Brian now and then during our years at college. I'm so sad to hear of his passing!!!! He was always so sweet and funny. I'm sure he will be missed. My sympathies to his family, his friends and his community. Kate Arnold Kolbrener

Dr Kalla lived life as though the day he was born he was told you have a limited number of years, make them count. I called his cell Sat night after hearing the news, thinking he will get a laugh from this, but straight to voicemail. I was lucky to have worked with him for the past 9 yrs and even luckier to call him a friend. His approach was "why not". He didn't mill over choices. He would say try and see if it works. Even when stopped, he was in constant motion, leg bouncing, hand tapping, mind racing, but he made it work. He could minimize any problem with his directness and sense of humor but not seem callous about it. He was about intensity, whether it was a fast car, a crazy spicy food, running a race or even his bright clothing. He said years ago, that if it weren't for Suzanne, he probably wouldn't be here. Thank you, Suzanne, for slowing him down as best you could all of these years. I question what happened and then I hear him say, as I have many times in the past about a patient passing, "the heart stopped, it's always the heart stops". He lived life to the fullest for his family, friends and patients and for that he will be truly missed. My deepest sympathies and prayers are with the family.

There are just no words for this kind of loss. What a unique and wonderful physician. I worked with him many years ago at Siskin when he was a resident. Then recently became his patient and got to know him from a whole different perspective. My husband John and I miss him already, and there will never be another like him. So straightforward, honest, silly, and super smart. I trusted him completely with my medical care. Truly we are praying for mercy and comfort for his family and close friends. Angela Jordi

Dr Kalla was the first doctor I worked with when coming to Siskin Hospital in 2004. I worked side by side as a nurse with him and his longtime PA, Marc Mayes.....He ALWAYS started out the day very cheerful(I would ask him what was in that diet coke)! I grew to love his sarcasm, his dry jokes-he would always say exactly what WE all wanted to say but couldn't! He once told me he knew if I approached him about something he needed to shut up and listen to me! That made me very proud! I loved that when you called him you could always hear his family in the background and I would apologize for interrupting but would assure me I was ok! My prayers go out to his precious family and children...all of us at Siskin will never forget the "Kalla man" or his energy!
